wendy

remember when audrey hepburn declared she didn't consider herself exceptionally beautiful and that her beauty is actually very common? well, she's both right and wrong on both accounts. wrong because she IS exceptionally beautiful, and quite right about the "common" part. one of my professors even looks like her except imagine a blonde, boy-cut-haired audrey in glasses. though not as girlish as audrey, she does stand out because she has really kind eyes, always a welcoming smile, amusing english accent and teaches well.

and she gave us a 17 for our project, haha, not that it affects her beauty whatsoever. but i'm quite happy she found our project interesting. we were working on fog lamps at the beginning but there's just not much references on fog lamp design and quality measurements except on patents. i think if we had more time we'd have been able to read through the industry standards document, for one, and understand the basic designs of fog lamps.

anyway, we did an optimization on SELFOC lenses, which pleased her. she didn't even have further comments during the assessment which is a relief because we had quite a lot of trouble trying to rationalize why we couldn't increase the input angle to more than 27.5 degrees. anyway, there it was and all is well :)

ocs

prof. van erps sure does take his time during exam interviews, they've even been at it with floris for around 45min. and since it's a closed book exam i had time to rewrite the questions for lack of anything else to do while waiting for my turn. for my alone time. with my crush. aw. hahaha.

Q1. you were hired as a telecom operator to design a trans-oceanic link spanning 4000km operating at a bitrate of 800Gb/s. your employer has proposed the following components to be used in the link:
- directly modulated DFB laser operating at 1550nm
- gradient index multimode fiber
- semiconductor optical amplifier
- silicon PIN photodetector
give a comprehensive assessment on whether or not these devices are suitable for the link. propose a solution otherwise. provide figures, equations, and a discussion of the underlying physical phenomena.

A1. (just a summary because i'm lazy and..how do you write down equations on blogspot?)
- use an externally modulated laser because a DM laser would generate chirp. at very high bitrate, like 800Gb/s, inter-symbol interference would be so profound you can no longer differentiate between signals/data. DFB laser is a good choice because a narrow linewidth of ~0.001nm is achievable which would reduce the effect of intramodal dispersion in the fiber. how to code 800Gb/s? WDM. the operating wavelength of 1550 nm is also a good choice. it falls in the middle of the 3rd transmission window and has the lowest loss among the three transmission windows. attenuation of 0.2dB/km is easily achievable at 1550 nm.
- use a single mode fiber for long haul transmission to avoid intermodal dispersion.
- use an optical fiber amplifier instead of a SOA because it has lower loss and is data transparent. EDFA is used for amplification at 1550nm.
- depending on the receiver sensitivity and power budget, PIN detector may or may not be a good choice. should the receiver sensitivity fall below the required value, this could be increased by either adding a pre-amplifier, using an APD instead of a PIN detector, or doing coherent detection instead of direct detection. the material also determines at which wavelength you can detect photons. for 1550 nm, a suitable choice would be InGaAsP as silicon is transparent at that wavelength.

Q2. give and derive the dispersion criterion for chromatic intramodal dispersion. what can you learn from it?

A2. dispersion criterion: B・L・|D|・dlambda < 1. basically tells you the relationship between different factors affecting transmission. for example, in order to transmit at longer lengths, L, the laser linewidth, dlambda, should be significantly small..etc.

Q3. which nonlinear effects play a role in optical telecom systems? how do you avoid them?

A3. nonlinear effect occurs because of the intensity dependence of the refractive index. generally, to avoid these effects, modulate the input power and amplifier gain.
SPM - use a power source with as narrow a linewidth as possible.
XPM - nonlinearity occurs in MMF. use non-zero dispersion shifted fiber.
FWM - use non-zero dispersion shifted fiber.

Q4. what is the cut-off wavelength of a fiber? where does it play a role?

A4. (see notes)

Q5. give an example of how WDM can be used to facilitate communication in a local area network.

A5. (see notes. what i did, though, was give different LAN topologies and explained where multiplexing and demultiplexing can take place as well as what kind of lasers are best suited at each node.)

joke time

Example of europeans being "lazy" (on the topic of why Asian companies dominate production and manufacturing) by Prof. Marc Goldchstein:

"We were on our way to a trade fair and we needed to carry these large CRT monitors and scanners to the show. Then my colleague said 'Okay, I'll carry the software.'"

Hahaha :P Best exam ever, we were laughing through most of the interview.

balloon

the little pink balloon bounced towards me.
it was so unexpected i uttered a most gleeful "gyaaaah!" and gave it a little thump.
then he laughed. so hard.
i didn't notice someone was walking behind me.
oops. blush.
but he laughed and said "you look so happy with it, pick it up."
but i didn't.
so he picked it up and gave it to me. "here, it's my gift for you."
he was still laughing when i stopped by my door. "big child! hahaha", and waved.
owkaaay. haha :P

i made someone smile today. someone made me smile today. it is a good day :)

the moon song (karen o)

Soundcloud: the moon song

Intro Dm - G - C

  Dm      G       C
I'm lying on the moon
   Dm          G    C
My dear, I'll be there soon
       Dm     G      C
It's a quiet and starry place
             Dm        G
Time's we're swallowed up
    F                   Fm            C
In space we're here a million miles away

There's things I wish I knew
There's no thing I keep from you
It's a dark and shiny place
But with you my dear
I'm safe and we're a million miles away

We're lying on the moon
It's a perfect afternoon
Your shadow follows me all day
Making sure that I'm okay and
We're a million miles away

gunther

6 foot something.
35 this year.
Prof. Dr. ir.
over 300 international publications! (Both authored and co-authored)
8 patents.
piano guy.
blue-eyed.
golden-haired.
soft spoken but confident. but, then again, who wouldn't be confident after hundreds of publications? :P

well, 300 or more is a fine goal but it might not be for me. if i do decide to proceed with a ph.d. then 3 international publications would be a good goal to start with (because it's required, haha). they say in order to be happy you should be honest with yourself. so, ishchan, do you honestly want a doctorate degree? do you, do you? if mom or gunther or dries or wendy or jurgen or kristiaan or oliver or even cute little prof. vounckx is not around to meddle in your decisions or if you didn't have to run away from nor prove yourself to anyone..what would you do?

the red sun sets

i walked the long way past madou towards mont des arts yesterday in an attempt to clear my head before cutting short towards the congres column and took a right towards parc royale. from this street you can see all the way from saint marie's church to the edge of the royal palace where the road turns sharply to the right. i realized i could now name all the tram stops all the way from louise to schaerbeek gare. i also remembered my first day in brussels when i went out to look where to buy a bike. without noticing it i had already purchased one and it was quite a dilemma how to get it home because i took the tram to an unfamiliar part of town and quite far away from where i live. fortunately, the tram lines do not go underground in this part of the city so i was able to follow the tracks home. the francois englert exhibit on the 2013 nobel prize is still on display at the park. when i reached mont des arts, the sun was only starting to set and the golden lining on the clouds are slowly turning red. the skyline here is pretty good because you're in direct view of the grote markt but the view is very limited because of the huge art museum on the left and the theatre on the right. so i decided to head a little further and took the tram to poelaert and was greeted with this stunning view of the big, red setting sun. the street performer, my fiddler on the balcony, was playing such a slow, melancholic tune i'm not familiar with but complimented the atmosphere well.
