copyreading old journal entries. a nice thing about journals is that i get to surprise myself with the ideas i've written down when i was younger (wow, i SAID that?! wow, i knew how to use that word?! aack, what was i thinking? facepalm!). truly, more often than not it could be really shallow (like several pages of why i thought my parents were wrong for not permitting me to join a school event written with the fierce intensity of an angry teenager resigned to her fate yet intent on plotting revenge hahaha :P) and the grammar, ghastly, yet sometimes i do get smitten by certain moments of acute perception and wisdom.

people create relationships because they need a witness to their lives. for who else would testify that you have lived but the people you've forged relationships with. who else would testify that you were once the person who picked a starfish from the beach and smiled. who else would testify that you did laugh, cry, sneeze, or make crazy jokes. because no matter how superlative you think you've lived your life, if not for them, you're as good as having never lived at all.

the new year number game

13 - Thirteen is one of the smartest, prettiest, friendliest, best-smiliest, best-physicistiest, cutest, breath of fresh air when she's in the roomiest persons i know.
i decided to give it a try so i gave the number 13 to a friend. i was not disappointed haha. i miss you kuya. if i were to say something about you, it would be this:

<i don't even know where to begin. i've been looking at this page with my fingers on the keyboard for five minutes now thinking about our interactions in the past. hmm, this may be incoherent but i guess i'll start by writing out exceptional moments in bullet points.>

  • highschool. me, a freshman, you, a junior. math month. contest in groups with two year level representatives each group. you actually gave us the opportunity to solve the problems and we weren't merely flowers to complete the group. we won, by the way :)
  • highschool. i see you and your group of friends walk by every now and then. i always thought your batch was cool. and friendly, which makes you even cooler.
  • college. me, freshman, you junior. you and ate adele still recognize me! i love you both.
  • college. CSM-EC. jamming in the office after palakasan duties for the day.
  • college. KMP officers. you were always one of the people i see anyone could trust to get the work done properly and on time.
  • college. problem set tutorial sessions because i never ask tj anything studies-related. haha. pride IS my downfall.
  • college. KMP/physics areas. you (and everyone else, actually) making sungog me to tj. haha.
  • college. CSM lobby. we were watching tj and some other physics people playing table tennis (sir lou was the other player, if my memory serves me right). you telling me you think highly of our batch because i was in it.
  • college. you crying because of the result of your thesis defense. i hugged you. you really don't deserve it.
  • college. me, the KMP president. us talking about responsibilities. you giving advice about how to handle people, how to run the organization. you telling me i was doing a good job.
  • kantahan sessions. chikahan sessions. you and your corny jokes. you and your inspiring little pep talks.
  • sunday morning, rain is falling ♪
  • you know, i observe people and try to emulate their good traits. i was observing you and every time i'd think, i am going to be as friendly to everybody as you. i am going to be as intuitive (with physics-related stuff) as you. i am going to be as reliable as you. i'm gonna practice playing the piano more because you play the guitar so well. haha. i admire your excellent grammar hahaha. but seriously, grammar matters a LOT. i admire most your passion for teaching and passion in passing on your knowledge and talent to others. i looked up highly to three people from your batch: you, ate adz, and tj. whatever i have accomplished in college, i want you to know you have been a great influence.
you never fail to see the best in me, sometimes i don't even think i deserve it. but thank you ^_^

guilty or innocent?

i found this from a friend's note and decided it might be fun answering these out-of-the-blue questions. the rule is that you're not supposed to explain anything. but this is my post and i can do whatever i want so i would break the rules in some parts >:) so, here goes..

RULE 1
You can only say Guilty or Innocent.

RULE 2
You are not allowed to explain anything unless someone messages you and asks!
(So people reading this, if you want an explanation.. comment.)

Now, here's what you're supposed to do... And please do not spoil the fun. Copy and paste this into your notes , delete my answers, type in your answers and tag 20 of your friends to answer this. Then see what happens.

pasko na!

why did you take the photo? because christmas is fast approaching and this little ball might just be the only christmas decoration i might ever put up. it hangs on my table lamp and is a perfect pop of color against the monotonous blackness of my lamp, blinds, and laptop. plus i like this photo because apart from the doodle and the crop, it's practically unedited. the lamp light made all the variations of color.

diffuse sun

winter is coming
why did you take the photograph? because the 10 o'clock sun was beautiful and it made the fallen leaves appear more yellow and the pavement glitter with the morning dew. despite the biting cold, it made the whole place look warm and inviting.

ishnoooooooow!

so how was your first experience of snow? GREAT! on the way to class we were talking with Xiaomin about how cold the weather is getting and we touched on the topic of snow. i mentioned it never snows in the philippines and when it will start to fall this year it'd be my first experience of snow. when we were walking back after class, amid the flurry of opening our umbrellas and putting up our hoods, he turned around, made a big smile and said "you realize this is snow, right?". haha. he's such a baby :)) anyway, it's great seeing snow fall. it wasn't as impressive as i thought it would be though - it fell with the rain. i realized it was snow because it's bigger than the other droplets and doesn't follow a relatively straight path, sort of swishes back and forth on the way down. brrr. -7deg :D

thoughts on the philippines 1

my news feed is a jumble of pro-pnoy, anti-pnoy, help tacloban, help survivors, find this person, secure this place, donate this, donate that, corruption, and an even more serious jumble of hashtags and tags and people blaming and back-stabbing each other. it's a sadly recurring scenario whenever catastrophic calamities strike that i could forecast to a good approximation what sort of news will come out in the next few weeks following the event. speedy access to information is critical to a lot of operations but the internet has also made a lot of people a master of things they actually have no idea about and it's making accurate information gathering a harder thing to do. indeed, if one wishes to obtain correct data, then facebook is definitely not your go-to source for information. personally i do believe the government is also doing their duty in the best way they can. of course they have their own more secured and faster lines of communication that's why we never get reliable info on social media.

anyhow, i am not discussing the competencies of the philippine government now. what follows is a series of ideas that probably aren't unique, someone might have thought about it before or i might have gotten the exact train of thought from someone else, but it's my work in progress in trying to analyze the cause of the hardships my country is facing. and, of course, one tries to look for solutions.

it does not take much effort to note and understand that the philippines is not a stable country, literally. it stands on the border of the pacific plate making it prone to earthquakes and heavy volcanic activity as opposed to countries located on the interior of the plates themselves which are generally free of earthquakes (take belgium for example, no earthquake in almost 5 years!). furthermore, it stands on the brink of the pacific ocean making it virtually unshielded from typhoons formed over the pacific.

so there you have it, we have nice tropical weather all year round but (as my professor would say) there's no free lunch. we will always be battered by earthquakes and typhoons and volcanic activities until this little group of islands become so scattered apart it no longer resembles the philippines of 2013 or the plates decide it's high time to swallow the philippines.

but until that time we have 97 million people trying to make a living, squeezed into our little group of islands. and what happens in the philippines is this: we go through a certain calamity, we help rebuild the affected areas, then we relax and wait for the next big calamity to strike. the problem is, the threat of these kind of disasters is always imminent. some things you can predict can give you time to prepare but other times calamity strikes without a warning and when that happens we're left helpless once again. the sad thing is, most of the country's remaining funds are being channeled into rescue, relief, and rebuild operations whenever some big calamity strikes it's siphoning funds supposedly allocated for other projects. (okay, i have no concrete evidence for this last part, just intuition and some common sense because where else would the government get funds? yeah, loan, of course, and international aid..but still..)

what can we possibly do to minimize casualties and damage? in my former company, despite the tedious paperworks that go with it, closure and root cause analysis seems pretty effective (when done properly). i strongly believe that once relief operations in this yolanda calamity, for example, has stabilized, the government officials should not pat each other in the back and give themselves a holiday for the good job of helping rebuild a city. no! what needs to be done is to call in order a meeting to discuss what preventive measures failed, what unexpected situations arose, and what needs to be done in order to prevent those kind of things from happening again. talks and investigations like these are being done, yes (like the investigation done after sendong) but somehow it ends with a lot of finger-pointing and implementation of short-term, unsustainable action items and we end up missing the point of coming up with long term action plans. it's like the annoying backlog in your todo list.

anyway, on a side note, what i have learned, and i shall never forget, is that in root cause analysis one cannot implicate an individual or the lack of time. this means, you cannot say the relief operation failed because mr. so-and-so doesn't know what to do. instead, you say, the responsible person is untrained in relief operations, for example. you see, it works positively in two ways. one, you're not stepping on somebody else's foot. you may be questioning his capabilities in some way but you're not stepping on his dignity. everybody makes mistakes, it's our moral responsibility to help him not to make the same mistakes twice. two, it's more objective, i suppose. as an action item you can therefore say "train personnel in relief operations" as opposed to "remove mr. so-and-so from office" or "train mr. so-and-so in relief operations". get what i mean?

some action items i have come up with (in no specific order) are the following:
1. short term: train a considerable number of personnel for relief and rescue operations that should be able to be deployed and operate within a day of a calamity. in the best case, the team should be ready by december considering we get a considerable amount of strong typhoons in december too.
2. short term: develop a process for the speedy implementation of relief and rescue operations. we must have some existing process, i suppose, so i'd like to add: furthermore, specify how and where in the process civilians and other non-government aid can enter. (this is a long and tricky item, it needs to be broken down further)
3. long term: educate and train all citizens on what to do when calamity strikes. yep. i read somewhere about how people used to really prepare for typhoons in the past. i agree that in the modern times people are getting too used to the comfort of city living and too dependent on the safety provided by man-made structures we sometimes forget practical rules for survival. plus, having modern infrastructures means we have a slightly different sort of emergency plan compared to before. so yep, we should be re-educated time and again.
4. long term: improve and develop infrastructures that is strong enough to withstand typhoons but flexible enough to withhold earthquakes. this is a huge engineering problem. let's look at cold countries, countries that experience winter, like belgium for example. they had houses made of timber wood and the like in prehistoric times. in order to get warmer in winter they developed tools and techniques and over the course of hundreds of years, improved their infrastructures. now most (if not all) houses in belgium are made of thick stone and concrete. glass windows are aptly layered and framed to keep the cold out whilst keeping it's aesthetic value. my point is, winter is inevitable. it comes yearly so might as well develop infrastructures and technologies that can help ward off the cold. like i said, it's a huge engineering problem. it might take years to develop, but might as well start now, right? on the other hand, you might say, they can have stones over their heads if they want, they don't experience much earthquake anyway. well, yes, so i suppose we can also observe how japan does it. why japan? japan is also in the ring of fire and is constantly ravaged by typhoons. why are their infrastructures still standing? can we implement those kinds of methods here in the philippines? i believe the government should put a serious amount of focus into improving our infrastructures (particularly sewerage).

sis

things that make me cry shouldn't be chronicled in this journal but this one is just too heart-warming it's a waste to get it lost in the ever changing facebook archives.
Sis !
While perusing the contents of my laptop, I found a one-page document with a one-sentence statent about you.
SISTER.
I wanted to tell her that if we were ever stripped to the core, she would have more substance. Dated 02.03.2010
aww T_T i know this is not entirely true since we are our own worst critic but to know that sometime in her life she felt that way about me makes me cry. i love you ate. you're the only room mate i ever had who never turned their back on me despite the constant fights, sibling rivalry, even distance. perhaps it's because no matter how annoying or depressing or frustrating i am, i'm still your sister and you really have no choice in the matter haha.

good days and how you define them

good days are when you have friends who tell you you CAN cook rice in a microwave using THE cooking ware with an "aperture" hahahaha. gotta go to del haize one of these days to buy one.
"the aperture here is the important part!"
cooking is easy, put it in the microwave for 15 minutes, take it out and add a little more water, cook again for another 5 minutes and tada! microwave rice.

good days are when you talk with another friend about the weather and you both realize: so this is why europeans love talking about the weather! the weather here is so changeable and the sunny days make people happy it's actually a really interesting topic for small talk :)) you can't say the same for philippine weather because it's the same all throughout the year except for the occasional typhoons which doesn't exactly make people happy. but, yeah, the weather's pretty nice today despite the wind :)

calendar syncing issue

i tweaked my phone again. i wanted my phone calendar synced to my google calendar, but unfortunately no matter how much i set it to sync automatically, it won't. actually, it wouldn't sync at all and i get this error icon on my google settings screen which is annoying because it's red..plus it has an "!" on it. i could install google calendar, it has no problem syncing the data with my browser. the only problem is, i kinda like the phone calendar UI better.

google calendar vs. phone calendar
the agenda for the selected day shown at the bottom of the phone calendar is most convenient. plus you can set the view (month, week, or day) in one click unlike for google calendar where you have to do it in two clicks (press "October 2013" then select view).

so the only workaround i could think of to get the best features from both is to have both apps installed on my phone. what it does is, i edit tasks in the phone calendar which gets automatically synced with my google calendar which, in turn, is also synced with the cloud. a waste of memory space, yeah, but i don't suppose i'll be doing heavy scheduling of tasks for now so it should be okay. should i need space later, one of the calendars needs to go haha.

random pics

one week and three days in belgie! so much has has been going on the past week that "update journal" finds itself at bottom of my to-do list. i haven't taken a lot of pictures so far because of the hectic schedule due to a week's delay, but i'll get onto it the moment i catch up :D

i've been tweaking with the phone my sister gave me though. deleted a few unnecessary apps (london bus countdown, etc) and adding stuff i really need (de lijn, gmail, skype, google translate) and, of course, changing the background which isn't really necessary but it makes me happy anyway.

tadaaa! it's not one of my best paintings in terms of composition (rightmost feathers are hastily painted for a start) but for the moment it's my favorite and it's the one i miss the most considering it's no longer in my collection at home.

anyway, here are other random pics which aren't related to each other but i love my camera phone.
tigidig! tigidig!
meow!

i found this little cat at the bottom of my hair accessories bag. i'm not much of a cat person but i'm still happy this little kitty followed me halfway round the world :) i should give it a name or something.

i'll stop here for now.

nat and cowie

surprise! surprise! meet the latest addition to the family - cowie and little baby nat :D

nat and cowie, belly rub pose :))

mama got these little japanese spitz from a family friend last week while we were out of town. cowie is male and already four months old. he's usually quiet and reserved and doesn't wander around as much as nat does. he barks at nat and the cats during meal times, though.

cowie

nat is our little baby girl. she's only about a month old, born last august 2. papa bought a big pack of cerelac especially for her. she can eat by herself but she particularly likes licking food from your fingers. hehe. she's a jolly little fur ball, always bounding up and about.

nat

i don't usually like toy dogs, i generally prefer the big ones. but for nat and cowie i'd make an exception hahaha. cuteness overload!

ishi the idealist

one of the classes i enjoyed going to the most when i was in college was the course on philippine government and constitution. on one occasion we were made to write a "blueprint for change", our idea of what actions the government must take to effect change in the country. here was mine:

"Blueprint for Change"
The following will have a higher percentage of efficiency and effectiveness if the leaders of this government are themselves competent for the leadership positions they hold.
  • Effect a shift from unitary to federal form of government. This way it will be easier for the government to recognize regions which needs assistance the most.
  • Implement a moral recovery program. This could be done through giving importance to subjects such as GMRC, History, and Filipino in all academic levels and by recognizing the efforts done by NGO's like CFC's GK777 and others.
  • De-privatization of some companies and building government-owned companies. This is to provide job opportunities to Filipinos who have not earned college degrees, hence, they cannot find jobs in private corporations. These companies shall train employees for administrative positions also and implement programs that would sustain local economy. This shall hold until such time that it would seem fit for the government to sell these companies to private corporations provided they are not foreign investors.
  • Prioritize agrarian reform programs. Host conferences and training workshops for farmers.
  • Send rockets to the moon! But, seriously, focus first on applying science and technology in finding ways to reuse the country's abundant natural resources.

..then send rockets to the moon :P

adventure time

you know public schools. during exam day we had test questionnaires you MUST NOT write on, which were collected back at the end of the subject period, and were then forwarded to another section in rotation. my teachers think i'm kind, and good, and responsible (and all things nice) because i always volunteered to take stuff to other classrooms. but, in reality, this was exactly what i've been thinking all those times. EXACTLY. teehee :D
